How it works

Your grade in four steps

Most courses don't count every assignment equally. This calculator weights each score the way your teacher does.

  1. Find your weights

Check your syllabus for how much each part counts, like homework 15%, midterm 25%, final 35%.

  2. Enter your scores

Type each grade and its weight. Use percentages or points like 42/50. Add rows as you need them.

  3. Set a goal

Enter the grade you want overall. The calculator works out what you need on the remaining work.

  4. Try scenarios

Change your expected score to see how the final could turn out. Everything updates as you type.

The math

How weighted grades are calculated

Weighted average

Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results, then divide by the total weight you've entered.

average = Σ(grade × weight) ÷ Σ weight

Dividing by the weight entered so far, not always by 100, shows your current standing even when only part of the course is graded.

Grade needed on the final

needed = (target × 100 − Σ grade×weight) ÷ remaining

Above 100% means the goal can't be reached without extra credit. At 0% or below, you've already secured it.

Worked example

CategoryGradeWeightG × W
Homework92151,380
Quizzes9010900
Lab reports88151,320
Midterm exam79251,975
Total655,575
Average so far: 5,575 ÷ 65 = 85.77% (B)
For 90% overall with the 35% final: (9,000 − 5,575) ÷ 35 = 97.86%
Scoring 85% on the final: (5,575 + 2,975) ÷ 100 = 85.5%

Does your class use points instead of percentages?

In a points system, your grade is total points earned divided by total points possible. You can still use this calculator: enter each score as points (like 45/50) and use the points possible as the weight (50). The result matches adding up all your points.

Letter grades

Plus and minus grading scale

The tile marked "You" follows your average in the calculator.

Each letter's GPA value sits at the middle of its percentage range, so plus and minus ranges are 3.5 points wide and plain letters are 3 points wide. Your school may use a different scale; check your syllabus.

Tips

Ways to raise your grade

Focus on heavy weights

Five extra points on a 35% exam adds 1.75 to your grade. On a 5% quiz it adds 0.25.

Turn everything in

A zero hurts far more than a low score. Handing in something almost always beats nothing.

Check early

Run the numbers mid-term, while a big share of the grade is still open to change.

Ask your teacher

If a goal looks out of reach, ask about extra credit or retakes before the term ends.

FAQ

Common questions

Do my weights need to add up to 100%?

No. The calculator divides by the weight you've entered, so you can check your average partway through the term. Once every part of the course is graded, your weights should total 100%.

Can I enter a grade above 100?

Yes. If you earned extra credit, enter the actual score, such as 104. Grades can't be negative.

What if the grade I need is over 100%?

The goal can't be reached on the remaining work alone. Lower the target to see what's realistic, or ask your teacher about extra credit.

My class has several assignments per category. What do I enter?

Average the assignments in each category first, then enter that average with the category's weight. Quiz scores of 80, 90 and 100 in a 10% category become a grade of 90 with a weight of 10.

What's the difference between my grade and my GPA?

Your grade is a percentage for one class. GPA turns each class's letter into points (4.0 for an A, 3.0 for a B) and averages them across all your classes, usually weighted by credit hours.

Why is my teacher's grade different?

Teachers may drop the lowest score, round differently or use another letter scale. Treat this as an estimate and your official gradebook as the final word.

Is my information saved or shared?

No. Everything is calculated in your browser. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.
