Our free Easy Grade Calculator allows you to receive a test or quiz or assignment grade instantly. Answer the total number of questions and the number of incorrect answers and the calculator will display the percentage, number of correct answers, and the letter grade – without needing to do any calculations. It’s designed for teachers who want to grade papers fast and students who want to see their grade before the results are published. The colour coded grading chart shows which grade the test will be marked at for each number of incorrect answers, which means you won’t need to recalculate each test if you are marking a whole stack of tests.

Scale used: A 90–100, B 80–89, C 70–79, D 60–69, F below 60. Your teacher’s scale may differ.
An EZ Grader quickly converts “number of questions missed” to a percentage and a letter grade, eliminating the need to do the division manually. It is used by the teacher to quickly mark off a pile of tests and by the student to know where they are after a quiz. The EZ grader is explained, what it is, the simple formula behind it, a ready to use EZ grader chart and the grading scale used by most schools.
How to use the EZ Grader
All you need is two numbers to use an EZ grader: the total number of questions and the number the student missed.
To begin with, put the number of questions in the test (25, in this case). Then, type the number of incorrect answers that the student gave. Some graders allow you to type the number correct as well. The tool then displays the percentage score and the corresponding letter grade (where applicable).
Many EZ graders also have a full chart showing all of the possible scores on that test, which you can refer to next to your test while marking the entire class. If a question is for half a mark, answer it with half a mark – e.g. answer it with 2.5.
This is yet another useful hint for teachers: Only change the “missed” number for each paper and set the total only once. The 30 tests can be completed in just a few minutes.
What is an EZ grader?
A quick-grading device called an EZ grader will transform the variety of incorrect responses on a test into a percentage score. It began as a small cardboard slide chart that teachers would store on their desks – you lined up the number of questions and then read off the point designation for each number that was skipped. The same idea is being utilized today as a free online calculator.
It is well-liked by teachers and students because of its reasons. It is quick, as there is no lengthy division on each paper. It’s accurate, meaning that it won’t have any math mistakes when you’re marking it at night. This is fair, because it will be applied to everyone equally. It also provides clarity for students – how many marks are awarded for each question and what they are required to demonstrate to achieve the next grade level.
EZ grader is designed for any test consisting of questions of the same value, such as quizzes, spelling tests, unit exams and worksheets.
How to calculate a test grade from questions missed
To determine a test grade, divide the number of questions answered by the total number of questions and multiply by 100.
For instance, a test consists of 25 questions, and a student fails to answer 4 of them, then he/she can be said to have answered 21 correctly. A score of 0.84, when converted to a percentage, is 84%, or a B.
A student misses 7 out of 40 questions on a test and scores 33 of the questions correct. 33 divided by 40 is 0.825, so the score is 82.5%, also a B.
Both points and the above can be used by the same method. If a test has 50 points and a student loses 6.5 points then they will score 43.5 points. 43.5 divided by 50 is 0.87, giving a score of 87%, or a B+.
A handy tip: To determine the value of each question, divide the total mark value (100) by the number of questions. On a 20-question test, each question is worth 100 ÷ 20 = 5%. If I miss 3 questions, it is 15% off and I am left with 85%.
EZ grader chart
The EZ grader chart shows the score for all possible numbers of incorrect answers; thus, a test may be scored in one glance. There are charts for the two most frequent test lengths below. The scale for the letter grades is:
20-question test (each question = 5%)
| Questions missed | Correct | Score (%) | Letter grade |
| 0 | 20 | 100 | A+ |
| 1 | 19 | 95 | A |
| 2 | 18 | 90 | A− |
| 3 | 17 | 85 | B |
| 4 | 16 | 80 | B− |
| 5 | 15 | 75 | C |
| 6 | 14 | 70 | C− |
| 7 | 13 | 65 | D |
| 8 | 12 | 60 | D− |
| 9 | 11 | 55 | F |
| 10 | 10 | 50 | F |
25-question test (each question = 4%)
| Questions missed | Correct | Score (%) | Letter grade |
| 0 | 25 | 100 | A+ |
| 1 | 24 | 96 | A |
| 2 | 23 | 92 | A− |
| 3 | 22 | 88 | B+ |
| 4 | 21 | 84 | B |
| 5 | 20 | 80 | B− |
| 6 | 19 | 76 | C |
| 7 | 18 | 72 | C− |
| 8 | 17 | 68 | D+ |
| 9 | 16 | 64 | D |
| 10 | 15 | 60 | D− |
For any other test length, use the formula above or an online EZ grader to build the chart instantly.
EZ grader grading scale
In most U.S. schools, a 100-point scale is used with a 90% or higher being an A grade, and 60% or lower being an F. Many colleges and universities use plus and minus letter grades, which are displayed below with the typical 4.0 GPAs.
| Letter grade | Percentage | GPA (4.0 scale) |
| A+ | 97–100% | 4.0 |
| A | 93–96% | 4.0 |
| A− | 90–92% | 3.7 |
| B+ | 87–89% | 3.3 |
| B | 83–86% | 3.0 |
| B− | 80–82% | 2.7 |
| C+ | 77–79% | 2.3 |
| C | 73–76% | 2.0 |
| C− | 70–72% | 1.7 |
| D+ | 67–69% | 1.3 |
| D | 63–66% | 1.0 |
| D− | 60–62% | 0.7 |
| F | Below 60% | 0.0 |
Scales differ between schools and teachers. Some use a stricter scale (for example, 94% or higher for an A), so always check your syllabus or school handbook.
Frequently asked questions
Does the EZ grader work?
Yes. It is based on the same percentage formula as the teacher would use by hand, which means the result will be the same for tests with equal point values.
May I use an EZ grader for weighted questions?
Do not use total questions, use total points. Give the percentage as “missed” and the grader will provide the correct percentage.
What percent is 3 out of 20?
17 out of 20 is 85%, which is a B on most scales.
What percent of the questions are wrong on a 25 question test?
20 out of 25 is 80%, which is a B−.
Conclusion
An EZ grader eliminates the guess work and math involved in grading. Just put in the number of questions answered and the number of questions missed and you’ll have a percentage and letter grade in no time. Time is saved by teachers and students are aware of their position. Use the newest calculator to grade for rapid, free grading!
